ML’s Journey: Regaining Confidence & Independence At Caraway House
ML is a 90-year-old gentleman who was admitted to Caraway House Care Home in Selsey for respite care following a Transient Ischaemic Attack. Before his admission, he lived at home with his wife and was supported by in-home care services and his family.
After his TIA, he experienced reduced mobility, muscle weakness and a significant loss of confidence. The initial aim of his short-term stay was to support his rehabilitation, rebuild his strength and help restore his confidence in moving independently.
On arrival, ML needed encouragement and close support with walking. The team took a gentle and consistent approach, working with him daily and supporting regular walks along the corridors. Staff focused on building trust and reassurance, and over time these small, steady steps led to visible progress. As his confidence grew, ML began to walk further with less support and more independence.
One of the most meaningful milestones came when ML started walking independently to the bistro. The team encouraged this step and supported him as he built up confidence to make the journey on his own. He began enjoying coffee and snacks there and soon found a familiar seat where he would spend time chatting with residents, relatives and staff. Over time, he became a warm and familiar presence in the communal areas, often seen sharing moments like celebrating St Patrick’s Day with a few close residents.
ML’s family shared that he has always been happiest in the company of a few familiar people rather than larger group activities. The home recognised this and shaped his support around his preferences, helping him feel included in a way that suited his personality and comfort. He continues to take part in activities at his own pace and in his own space, including enjoying gentle animal therapy sessions such as time spent with a baby goat.
During his stay, ML’s wife also moved into the home while receiving care. This was a very emotional time for ML and his family. Staff provided consistent, compassionate support to ensure both ML and his family were cared for with dignity and comfort. The team also supported the family practically, including meals and refreshments so they could remain together during long visits.

Since then, ML has continued to thrive. He enjoys daily visits from his family, socialises regularly with other residents and participates in activities that suit his interests and personality. His mobility has improved significantly, moving from assisted walks to independently accessing communal areas.
ML’s journey shows real progress in both physical recovery and emotional wellbeing. Through steady encouragement, personalised support and genuine companionship, he has regained confidence, rebuilt independence and formed meaningful connections within the home community.
